WASHINGTON COUNTY COMMUNITY SCHOLARS

Washington County Community Schools Fall Awards Celebration:

On Friday, October 7, 2011, 178 Abingdon High School students were recognized for their participation in the 2010-11 Washington County Community Scholars program.  These 178 students gave over 6,000 service hours to various non-profit organizations throughout Washington County while maintaining good citizenship, attendance, and academic records.  Many of these students also assisted their neighbors and friends throughout Washington County by giving numerous hours for the tornado clean-up.  Joining in the celebration was Mr. Bo Catron, the High School Instructional Supervisor and Supervisor of WCCS; Mr. Chad Wallace, principal of Abingdon High School; and Mr. Andrew Hockett, assistant principal at AHS.  Brenda Kendrick, AHS Guidance Department secretary/registrar, who organized the celebration and is the WCCS coordinator for Abingdon High School.  Assisting with the celebration from AHS were Trina Gross, AHS guidance counselor; Connie Boger, AHS senior guidance counselor; Glenna Holmes, administrative assistant; Chelly Lilly, bookkeeper; and Linda Garnett, VHCC career coach.  We congratulate each student for being an outstanding Washington County Community Scholar!  These students were encouraged to continue their efforts for the 2011-12 school year, whereby the seniors will be eligible for two awarded scholarships and further scholarship tuition availability at Virginia Highlands Community College, based on their qualifications and the program's criteria.

Brenda Kendrick, AHS Guidance Office, is the coordinator for the program at Abingdon High School.  For more information on student participation, contact Ms. Kendrick at Abingdon High School.
