include relationship and emotional problems, academic failure, and drug
and alcohol issues. Parents, students, and faculty may refer students
who may be experiencing any or all of the above situations. The SAP is
confidential, voluntary, and free to all AHS students. The SAP
counselor is available at AHS on Monday through Friday.

- Lockers - Lockers
are
assigned
at
the
beginning
of
the
school
year.
A
student
should use only his or her assigned locker, and
students should not give out their combinations. Sharing of lockers is
discouraged. Personal locks are not permitted. Valuables should never
be kept in a locker. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen
items. Per School Board Policy, the school administration has the right
to search lockers, desks, and other storage facilities for items that
violate school policies and regulations or the law or for items that
may be harmful to the school or its students. Student use is on a
rental basis only.
- Textbook Rental - Textbooks
are
furnished
to
students
free-of-charge.
Students
are
responsible
for
lost
or
damaged books, and costs must be paid by the students before
transferring or before taking exams. Damaged fees will be charged
according to the amount of damage.
- AHS Media
Center - TThe mission of the
Abingdon High School Library/Media Center is to provide our students
with diversified resources to support and enhance the school's
prescribed curriculum, to further research, and to encourage the
development of lifelong learners. The media staff assists students in
the research process as they locate, analyze, evaluate, interpret, and
communicate information. The media center also provides an environment
conducive to developing student interests and exploration beyond the
required studies. The opportunity is afforded students to think
critically, to solve problems, to educate themselves about the rights
and responsibilities regarding information, and to appreciate the value
of reading literature in an educated society. The media center is open
Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. during the school
year and operates on the regular school calendar. Authentic,
Authoritative information for research is available through online
electronic resources 24-7. Students wishing to go to the Media Center
during the school day must obtain a pass from their classroom teacher.
- Food
Service - The
Abingdon High School Food Service provides well-balanced meals. Please
check out this site for more information. A letter is mailed home prior
to the beginning of each school year announcing prices for lunches.

- Insurance - Student
accident insurance is provided at no cost for each student
enrolled. However, students
may purchase an additional insurance policy for accident coverage. The
cost and
various types of policies are announced at the beginning of the school
year. All students participating in athletic programs must have
adequate coverage. Football insurance or a waiver stating adequate
coverage is required and is in addition to regular school accidental
insurance coverage. This coverage must be obtained prior to beginning
practice. The school will not be responsible for injury to uninsured
persons nor will it be responsible for expenses beyond the limitations
stated in the policy.

for
any

lunches, etc. However, there is a $15.00 service charge on all returned
checks. School Board Policy prohibits Abingdon High School from cashing
checks as a service to students and employees. Checks for
school-related services, fees, etc. should be made for the amount of
the fee or service only. Please be reminded that payment for classrings
and graduation orders to Balfour Company may be made only by cashier's
check, cash, or money order.
- Immunization Regulations
& Records - In accordance with the Code of Virginia
(Section 3.00 through 5.04) every new student and every student seeking
to be readmitted shall provide documentary proof of adequate
immunization before he/she can be admitted to Abingdon High School. The
school will abide by all aspects of the immunization regulations.
Students from another state must have a physical examination prior to
being enrolled at Abingdon High School.
- Use of Telephone and
Student Messages - All office phones are for business use only.
Non-emergency messages will be delivered to students at
the end of the school day unless otherwise arranged. Any
emergency situation will be handled immediately by administration on an
individual basis. Students who may become ill and need to call a
parent/guardian, should do so from the attendance office.
- Senior Privileges
- For certain assembly programs, seniors
will gather in the gym and enter to their reserved seat in the
auditorium after the remainder of the school has been seated.
Underclass students will rise as seniors enter. Other privileges may be
designated throughout the year as so approved and deemed by the
principal.
- Bus - Transportation
to and from school is a free service provided by the Washington County
School Board. To ride a different bus, students must present a written
note from home. The principal's designee will issue a permission slip
to ride the designated bus. Should discipline problems arise, students
may lose their privilege to ride the bus. Students should follow the
advice of the bus driver -- he/she is responsible for the safety of all
the passengers.
- Hall Passes - Students
excused into the halls from class must secure a pass from the teacher
from whose class they were released. A teacher is assigned to monitor
hallways during each period.
- Motor Vehicles - The
Washington
County
School
Board
provides
public
transportation
which
is
free
and
readily accessible to every student in the county. For this
reason, permission for a student to drive or to ride in private
vehicles to school will be granted by the principal of the school and
with the provision that students obey all Virginia laws and school
regulations relative to the operation of motor vehicles. Principals
reserve the right to deny requests by a student to drive whenever this
decision is in the best interest of the student and/or the school. If a
student leaves school without permission, his or her rights to drive
may be suspended.
Permission to drive to
school or to ride any conveyance other than the school bus will be
obtained under the conditions established by the school.
Under no circumstances will
a motor vehicle be moved during the school day without permission of
the principal or a teacher designated by the principal.
All drivers will observe all
speed limits and safety rules and will, in all cases, yield the
right-of-way to students who are walking.
Vehicles will not pass a
school bus which is loading or unloading on the school grounds. (State
law and school board regulation)
Vehicles are not to pass a
moving school bus while it is on school property or while within the
boundaries of the "School Zone" signs. Student violation of any state,
school board, or local school driving regulation will result in
immediate loss of driving privilege to school in addition to whatever
penalty is imposed by law.
All automobiles are to be
locked upon arrival at school, and the student is not to be in or
around the car until the end of his/her school day.
Students and employees will
park only in those areas designated by the principal of the school.
Students should purchase a parking permit and park in a valid parking
space in the east or west parking lots. Students parked in a "no
parking" space will be subject to a discipline referral and/or lose
driving privileges.
No high school student will
be permitted to drive to classes at the Washington County Technical
School or the Neff Vocational Center, unless permission granted by
principal.
- Student Appeals - Students
shall
have
the
right
to
appeal
any
administrative
decision
of
action
taken against them by school administrators to the next highest
authority with steps reaching to the board. An appeal is a formal
request for reconsideration of any action taken against or punishment
imposed on a student by a principal or central office administrator. A
student or his parents or guardian has the right to initiate an appeal.
All appeals must be placed in writing within five (5) school days of
the action taken, or the punishment upon which the appeal is based will
be imposed.
