OAKE National Choral Conference

6 chorus students standing together in formal wearOn Saturday, March 25, 2017, 6 students represented Abingdon High School in the OAKE National Choral Conference held in Philadelphia, PA. These students were selected among thousands of applicants from across the country and traveled to Philadelphia for 3 days of intensive rehearsal before performing at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday. group of students in hallway holding a few posters smilingAbingdon High School 4-H Members read to students of Abingdon Elementary.  The celebration of agriculture is sponsored by Farm Bureau’s “Ag in the Classroom” program.   The book, “Sleep Tight Farm” by Eugenie Doyle tells of a family preparing their farm for winter.  4-H members read to grades Pre-K through Second.

3 students holding a magazine in front of lockers Wings, the literary magazine for Abingdon High School, clinched another first place award in VHSL publishing competition this year. The magazine receives high praise every year from state judges. The 2016 edition was themed "Meraki," a noun describing the essence of yourself that is put into your work. The magazine featured prose, poetry, artwork, and photography from AHS students. Juniors Aidan D., India S., and Cleo S. served as Editors-in-Chief. This year, Aidan and India return to their leadership positions, with Kerringtan P. serving as Associate Editor. The magazine staff will hold a fundraiser to cover publishing costs at Pizza Inn on March 29th from 5-8 P.M.

Art Show

Female students standing beside her artwork with a blue ribbonAbingdon High School Art Students participated in the Artistic Excellence Competition art show. The art show was held on March 5th at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum. Each year high school art students from Upper East Tennessee and Southwestern Virginia work on their pieces getting ready for this competition. Featured is K. Martin with her artwork titled “Trinity”, which is entered in the “Black and White” category, her work is completed in graphite.  Ms. Martin won “best in Show” and received a $250.00 prize.” Ms. Martin also placed 2nd in the Colored Pencil category with her colored pencil artwork titled “Vision” receiving a $50.00 prize. Ms. Martin is planning a career in visual arts and will be attending Virginia Commonwealth University. In the Oil Painting category M. Flowers placed 2nd with her painting titled “Southern Style Peach” receiving a $50.00 prize. L. Price received 1st place in the Watercolor Painting category with her painting titled “Under the Sea”, she received a $75.00 prize. In the Acrylic Painting category M. Morris received an honorable mention for her painting titled “Yellow Submarine” and another honorable mention for her Mixed Media artwork titled “Starman”. In the Colored Pencil category K. Martin place 2nd with her colored pencil artwork titled “Vision” receiving a $50.00 prize. M. Nunley placed 1st in the Sculpture category with her sculpture titled “Roger the Alien” receiving a $75.00 prize.
