DRIVER EDUCATION CLASS ROOM AND BEHIND THE WHEEL REQUIREMENTS

THE FOLLOWING ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR DRIVERS EDUCATION AND BEHIND THE WHEEL FOR THOSE STUDENTS UNDER 19 YEARS OLD AND WHO ARE ATTENDING ABINGDON HIGH SCHOOL.

STUDENTS ARE ELIGIBLE TO GET THEIR LEARNER’S PERMIT WHEN THEY TURN THE AGE OF 15 YEARS AND 6 MONTHS. THEY ARE ELIGIBLE TO GET THEIR LICENSE AT THE AGE OF 16 YEARS AND 3 MONTHS. THEY MUST HOLD THEIR LEARNER’S PERMIT FOR 9 MONTHS REGARDLESS OF WHEN THEY RECEIVE THEIR LEARNERS.

STUDENTS WILL TAKE THE LEARNER’S PERMIT TEST AT THE DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES (DMV). REQUIRED DOCUMENTS ARE LISTED ON THE DMV WEBSITE AT www.dmvNOW.com, AS WELL AS OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION.

THE LEARNER’S PERMIT TEST CONSISTS OF A 10 QUESTION SIGN TEST AND A 25/30 QUESTION GENERAL KNOWLEDGE TEST. A STUDENT MUST SCORE A 100% ON THE SIGN TEST AND SCORE AN 80% ON THE GENERAL KNOWLEDGE TEST TO GET THEIR LEARNER’S PERMIT.

ONCE A STUDENT HAS RECEIVED THEIR LEARNER’S PERMIT, THEY MUST SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THE CLASS ROOM COURSE, THE 45 HOUR DRIVING LOG, WHICH THE PARENT OR GUARDIAN MUST SIGN, AND THE BEHIND THE WHEEL SEGMENT.

 

DRIVER EDUCATION CLASS ROOM REQUIREMENTS:

STUDENTS AT ABINGDON HIGH SCHOOL WILL SIGN UP FOR THE DRIVER EDUCATION CLASS ROOM PORTION DURING THEIR SOPHOMORE YEAR (10TH GRADE). THIS IS A 36 HOUR, IN THE CLASS ROOM, CLASS.

STUDENTS MUST PASS THIS CLASS PRIOR TO TAKING BEHIND THE WHEEL. THE DEC-1 CARD WILL SERVE AS A SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION CERTIFICATE AND WILL BE PLACED IN THE GUIDANCE OFFICE UNTIL THE BEHIND THE WHEEL SEGMENT IS COMPLETED.

 

BEHIND THE WHEEL PROCEDURES:

STUDENTS WILL SIGN UP FOR BEHIND THE WHEEL IN MRS. LILLY’S OFFICE, LOCATED IN THE MAIN OFFICE. STUDENTS MUST HAVE THEIR LEARNERS PERMIT AND $75.00 TO SIGN UP FOR BEHIND THE WHEEL.

STUDENTS ARE PLACED ON A WAITING LIST AND ARE SELECTED DEPENDING ON THEIR ELIGIBILITY DATE FOR THEIR 180 DAY LICENSES. THE STUDENT WILL BE CONTACTED BY THE BEHIND THE WHEEL INSTRUCTOR TO SCHEDULE DRIVING.

THE BEHIND THE WHEEL PROCESS IS 14 HOURS, 7 DRIVING AND 7 OBSERVING.

STUDENTS MUST HAVE A MINIMUM OF 23 OF THE 45 REQUIRED HOURS ON THEIR DRIVING LOG COMPLETED PRIOR TO TAKING BEHIND THE WHEEL.

 

YOUR TEMPORARY DRIVER’S LICENSE: 180 DAY LICENSES

AFTER ALL REQUIREMENTS HAVE BEEN MET, A TEMPORARY DRIVER’S LICENSE WILL BE ISSUED TO THE STUDENT IN THE GUIDANCE OFFICE AT THE TIME SET BY THE IN- CAR INSTRUCTOR. THIS TEMPORY LICENSE IS VALID FOR 180 DAYS.

PARENT OR GUARDIAN MUST HAVE THEIR LICENSE WITH THEM AND SIGN FOR THE 180 DAY LICENSE.

WITHIN 180 DAYS THE PARENT OR GUARDIAN WILL RECEIVE NOTIFICATION TO ATTEND COURT FOR THE LICENSING CEREMONY.

PARENT OR GUARDIAN AND THE STUDENT MUST ATTEND THE CEREMONY, BE ON TIME AND BE APPROPRIATELY DRESSED.

THE LICENSE WILL BE ISSUED TO THE PARENT OR GUARDIAN.
